About Bonito

Personality: Affectionate, Playful, Friendly, Funny

Bonito, our 45 pound 1 year old pitty mix, has a mysterious past. We don't mean "mysterious" like Bonito was in the CIA or has off-shore bank accounts. Bonito, instead, was found stray, covered in wounds and purple paint that has yet to fully wash off. The mystery is how this happened to such a nice dog; one who clearly should just be curled up on someone's couch.

Because of Bonito's wounds, the shelter reached out to us for help. Bonito also had a large sore on his wrist from chronically licking the area. Dogs sometimes do this when they are anxious, so we can only imagine Bonito had it very rough. Despite his condition, Bonito was immediately very charming and friendly. So, we took him in for treatment. To ease his anxiety, we started Bonito on fluoxetine (Prozac) which has made a huge difference. We aren't sure he needs to be on it forever, but he should be on it for at least a few more months. Fortunately it's very cheap. Although not all of the purple paint has faded, it mostly has, and Bonito is looking quite dapper.

Potty-trained, crate-trained, and good in the house, Bonito has been fun to have around. Although he initially struggled with being alone, he's able to do that now with few complaints. He has been working on leash skills and is doing well. Bonito has been respectful of the cat in his foster home and would do well with a dog-savvy cat friend. He also loves other dogs. He was once housed with another dog that didn't like Bonito much, but Bonito rolled with the punches and never snarled back. He self entertains and could spend all day dissecting stuffies.

Bonito is heartworm positive, which is another mystery. We don't often see that in Oregon. We have started heartworm treatment, and Bonito will come with 12 months of flea and heartworm preventatives. He will need to be tested again in October.

We aren't asking for an adoption fee for Bonito. We're only hoping his forever family will step up to giving him a great home. One with more time on the sofa and less time with the paintball gun.
